Visit the Thyolo region in Malawi; known for its excellent tea and the magnificent tea estates found there.
Pronounced "Cho - lo", Thyolo is a small town that acts as the administrative capital of the Thyolo District. Located in the south of Malawi, tea has been grown in the area since the early 1900s around the time of the British colonization.
The climate and weather in the area provides the ideal growing conditions for the plants and the region now consists mostly of lush green rolling hills and elegant tea estates.
Visitors to the area can explore the Thyolo Forest Reserve and the Thyolo Mountain and enjoy some bird watching and hiking. Some of the estates also offer guided tours where one can explore the farm and learn about how the plantations work.
The road between Blantyre and Mount Mulanje which passes through Thyolo region is one of the prettiest drives in Malawi and is highly recommended when planning your route.
