Location of Thawale Lodge in Majete Wildlife Reserve

The Thawale Lodge is ideally located in the Majete Game Reserve, on the lower Shire Valley in Malawi and is an estimate 70 km away from the Blantyre Chileka International Airport and Lake Malawi.

The Majete Game Reserve is renowned for its exceptional conservation efforts with African Parks and together they reintroduced 2 559 animals back into the wild.

Among the amazing creatures that roam the Majete Reserve are sable, buffalo, leopard, black rhino, eland, lion and elephant. The Majete Wildlife Reserve is the only reserve in Malawi where guests can view the Big Five.

Along with the restoration of wildlife in the Majete Wildlife Reserve came the improvement of infrastructure, scientific monitoring and law enforcement to make the reserve the best tourist destination in all of Malawi.

Getting to Majete Wildlife Reserve

Flights and transfers can be arranged, alternatively you can hire a vehicle and self-drive.

  • In Blantyre drive past the Victoria Hotel on the left side on Victoria avenue, take the road to the right to Chikhwawa and follow the signs to Majete Wildlife Reserve.
  • When arriving in Chikhwawa turn right at the T-junction where you will see a large green sign for Majete.
  • Drive along a tarmac road until you see a sign pointing to the left.
  • The road between Chikhwawa Boma and the park is about 20km down an all season dirt road which is accessible throughout the year.

The total journey takes approximately 1.5 hours in total. We recommend using a 4x4 vehicle during the wet season months and a high-clearance vehicle during the rest of the year.
