The Elephant Migration in Tarangire
Tanzania Safari Guide

Escape the crowds and see the other migration in Tanzania - Tarangire National Park is second to the Serengeti when it comes to sheer numbers of seasonal game gathering in one area. This park is really different from all the rest.Tarangire is the quiet alternative - it's got it all though between June and October - masses of game converging on the Tarangire River, predator action and superb game viewing opportunities, but best of all, you won't be jostling other visitors to get a slice of the action. The Tarangire River is sure to have water year round - it's a magnet for wildlife especially in the dry season. Wildlife numbering in the thousands migrates from Manyara and other areas in the surroundings to the Tarangire River, which cuts through the park and empties into Lake Burunge. This river is the only available water source for many miles around that doesn't completely dry up.

Wildlife

What sets this park apart is the incredible variety of wildlife in large numbers during the peak season. Thousands of Elephant converge on Tarangire, but they are not alone. You'll see plenty of Wildebeest, Zebra, Buffalo, Giraffe, Thompson's and Grant's Gazelles, Eland plus Greater and Lesser Kudu.Tarangire is also one of the very few places where you could spot the Long-necked Gerenuk and Fringe-eared Oryx, which are both dry country antelope species. With such a bounty of hoofed animals come the predators such as Lion, Leopard and Cheetah. For birding enthusiasts, the swamps provide a hotspot for observing one of the greatest diversities in breeding birds in the world. Endemic species include the Ashy Starling, Yellow-collared Lovebird and Rufous-tailed Weaver.
