Exclusive Livingstone Island

Livingstone Island is a 10 minute riverboat tour from your hotel and is located in the middle of the Zambezi River, on the edge of the Victoria Falls, where the water thunders down the 100 meter drop. It is here that Dr Livingstone first looked over the edge of the falls into the gorge below, and wrote: 'scenes so lovely must have been gazed upon by angels in their flight'.

The island is accessed by an 8 seater launch. Due to its unique nature, only 10 guests may visit and enjoy a choice of 4 island safaris, restricting this very exclusive island to only 40 visitors per day. For those who can afford this 5-star plus product, we highly recommend advanced reservations. Access to this unique island is seasonal and depends entirely on the water flow in the Zambezi River. It could very well be closed from February to mid-June.

Luxury River Cruises - African Queen

Experience the spellbinding combination of the mighty Zambezi River and the extravagance and gracious hospitality of the African Queen riverboat cruise. Drive down the Royal Mile to the marina and board the vessel at the same spot where King George embarked in 1947. The twin-deck, 120 seater African Queen is stylish and beautifully handcrafted, with two bars decorated in period wicker furniture and steamer chairs. It is the epitome of a classic Zambezi cruise experience.

There are several cruises to choose from. Start your day with our refreshing mid-morning cruise or a lazy lunchtime glide along the Zambezi. The upper Zambezi is also home to 15 species of Bream, including the Pink Happy, Three-spot Bream and the Nembwe as well as Yellow Fish, Barbel, Bottlenose, Squeaker and Labeo. In total there are over 75 species of fish lurking in these waters. Angling in this part of the world consists of fly-fishing, spinning and bait-fishing.

A stay here must be extended, allowing you to see the true African wilderness, where animals roam freely and the landscape remains unchanged over time. Take time to view Zambia's prolific wildlife.

This can be done in a number of different ways: on land in 4x4 safari vehicles, on water by jet boat, canoe or luxury cruiser, even on the back of an Elephant, or by horseback. Whichever way you decide to see this very beautiful area, your experience is one that will remain etched in your memory for a very long time. A range of excursions are available from the Activity Centre. Visit this region, famous for its beauty and diversity of wildlife.

Falls over the Edge

Thrill seekers will be delighted with some of the adventures available at The Falls Entertainment Convention Centre situated at the Victoria Falls in Zambia. Guests on their Zambia holiday can choose from a range of different adrenalin rushing activities.

White Water Rafting

This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to raft what is considered the wildest one-day white water rafting experience in the world. But, safety comes first. Safety kayakers are provided to facilitate faster support and better recovery of people in the river.

Only the highest quality equipment are used, which is upgraded on a regular basis. All guides are highly experienced and have first aid qualifications. Radio communication is also in place in case of an emergency and this service is included in the price, covering evacuation to a local medical facility.

Low Water Rafting

This experience is available approximately from mid-July to the end of January during the low water season. The best months are August to November. The day starts with a short, easy walk through the rainforest into the Boiling Pot below the Victoria Falls. Rafting starts with rapid number 1 (Paddy's Folly) through to rapid number 21. The top section of the Batoka Gorge (rapids 1-10) features the greatest concentration of grade four and five rapids anywhere in the world.

A light lunch is served on the banks of the Zambezi midway through the trip. The afternoon section (rapids 11 to 21) is gentler in nature, except for the world famous rapid 18, affectionately known as "Oblivion". The walk out of the gorge is steep (750 vertical feet) and rafters are encouraged to take their time. The guides will accompany you on this hike. Ice-cold soft drinks and beers are served at the top of the gorge before an approximate one-hour drive back to the hotel.

High Water Rafting

This high water trip is available from end January to mid-July depending on the water level. However, if the water levels are too high, the river will be closed for safety reasons. This might occur during April and May.

The day starts with a safety briefing over a cup of tea, coffee or juice. You are then transported to the gorge at rapid 10. You descend into the gorge to start the rafting trip. This trip covers the bottom section of the river, rapids 11 to 25. This section of the river is swift-flowing and features huge wave trains and many whirlpools, the most prominent being found in the narrows between 13 and 14.

Includes:

  • Tea, coffee and juice
  • Snacks
  • Soft drinks and beer at climb-out
  • Transfer back to The Falls Activity Centre

Jet-boat Extreme

Feel the wind in your hair and the cooling spray as you hurtle along at over 80kilometers per hour towards a series of spine-chilling rapids, buzzing rocks and jet-spinning on the mighty Zambezi River, in the spectacular Batoka Gorge below the Victoria Falls. These 6 meter long jet-propelled boats with Chevy engines, equating to an awesome 338 horse power, are capable of taking 11 passengers.

These jet-boats "play" between rapids 23 and 'open season' which is approximately at rapid 27. You are transferred by Land Rover (approximately 1 hour) to your entry point at the gorge. You meander down approximately 880 feet into the gorge where you meet your jet-boat pilot for a briefing. Water and soft drinks are available.

One of the most thrilling 30 minutes of your life is about to begin. After the ride, a long slow walk out begins, where a degree of physical fitness is required. Ice-cold beer and soft drinks await you at the top, after which you are transferred back to the Falls Activity Centre. Jet-boat pilots have been trained in New Zealand and have a minimum of 500 hours experience.

Jet-boat - Heli Combo

This option follows the jet-boat itinerary, but includes a thrilling helicopter transfer from the helipad after your 'stabilizing drinks'. The pilot then treats you to a spectacular flight at water level, then up out the gorge past sheer cliffs, then up, out of the gorge at tree top level, with a short 'flight of the angels' above the Victoria Falls. Landing at Maramba airstrip, you will be transferred back to The Falls Activity centre.

Sun International highly recommends these combinations as it adds numerous exciting experiences and avoids the walk out of the gorge. Includes: One-way road transfer to the Gorge and return by helicopter, soft drinks and briefing. 30-minute jet-boat experience, beer and soft drinks at end of boat trip.

Bungee Jumping

'Five, four, three, two, one, bungeeee!'

At 111 metres, it's one of the highest commercial jumps in the world, so hurling yourself off the Victoria Falls Bridge is definitely for adventure thrill-seekers only! With the Victoria Falls behind you and the mighty Zambezi River below you, this is not just any bridge and the jump is certainly not for the faint-hearted! (Your jump is in no-mans-land between Zambia and Zimbabwe and passports are required.)

There are two bungee options, a single jump on your own or a tandem jump with your partner (minimum age: 14-years; minimum weight: 140 kg). You meet at the activity centre at a time convenient to yourself and stroll with your passport to the Zambian immigration point. With your walk included, the entire experience takes approximately 45 minutes to an hour.

Abseiling, Gorge Swing and Flying Fox

Over the edge! This is either a half or full day activity, during which you can experience all four activities Abseiling and Rap Jumping: Like an alpine mountaineer, abseil down the gorge for approximately 50m. You then have an option of abseiling down, moving down backwards or rap-jumping down facing forward. You then walk out of the gorge.

Gorge swing:
Launch yourself off the edge in a full body harness and free fall for 53 metres. End your jump with numerous pendulum swings before you are lowered into the gorge for your walk out.

Flying Fox:
The Flying Fox is a cable-slide high above the gorge, allowing you an adrenaline-packed ride, in a seated or a flying position, face-down, like a bird. You are then manually pulled back to the gorge and no walk out is necessary. Includes Transfers to and from the Gorge at rapid 7 (+/- 15 minutes one way).

Choose your combination of activities. Tea, coffee and scones are provided at your morning arrival. Soft drinks and iced water during the day. The full-day option includes a cold lunch and soft drinks and beers at the end of the day. You can do all these activities as often as you wish, during the time you have reserved, when booking the full-day option.
