Makokola Retreat
Southern Lake Malawi

At the southern end of Lake Malawi is the renowned Makokola Retreat; known affectionately as 'Club Mak', this lakeshore lodge is the perfect place to relax after a thrilling Malawi safari.
  • Top southern lakeshore lodge
  • Exclusive deserted sandy beach
  • Warm lake water perfect for waters ports and swimming
  • Diving and snorkelling

Makokola Retreat used to be called Club Makokola, but has undergone a refurbishing process. The Lodge is spaciously laid out in well-tended gardens, but it is the beach that will draw your attention. The lodge has its own vast expanse of pale sand, dotted with low palms and thatched sunshades, under which lie sun loungers with padded cushions. A waiter will take your drinks order and deliver it to you on the beach - indulgence at its best.

Most of the rooms face the warm waters of Lake Malawi, which looks like a sea, but has neither tide, nor is it salty. It is perfect for water sports such as sailing and windsurfing. The lake is considered to have some of the best diving sites in the world; snorkeling and diving are done at a stunning little offshore island where tropical fish abound beneath the surface, and fish eagles announce their presence with a haunting cry, circling ever present above it.

The lodge has an enormous swimming pool, 44 meters (143 foot) long. You can get some serious exercise in this pool! If that all seems like too much effort, then just paddle up to the pool bar for a cool cocktail or an ice cold beer. Makokola Retreat has the only landing strip in the area, and it is just a short stroll to the lodge. This facility makes your Malawi safari very manageable and hassle-free.
