Where is Domwe Island, Lake Malawi National Park

Domwe Island is situated in the Southern region of Lake Malawi, about 25km North of Cape Mclear. Domwe Island is the largest unpopulated island in Lake Malawi with a circumference of 11km and a highest point 400m above lake level.

Most guests fly via Johannesburg, then to either Lilongwe or Blantyre. Once they have cleared customs, they then catch a private charter flight to Monkey Bay and then a road transfer to Cape Mclear. From Cape Mclear, it is a short boat ride to the island. Those feeling adventurous can choose to have a guide lead them on a kayaking expedition to the Island.

By air

SAA has daily flights between Johannesburg and Malawi. Kenya Airways has daily flights between Nairobi and Malawi. Air Malawi has flights on most days between Johannesburg/Dar es Salaam, and Malawi. From the international airports at Lilongwe and Blantyre there are charter flights and Air Malawi domestic flights to Club Makokola (the nearest airfield to reception). Flying time from Lilongwe and Blantyre to Club Makokola is approximately 40 minutes. You will then be taken to the meeting point at Cape Mclear where you will catch your boat transfer.

By Boat

It is possible to travel straight to Domwe Island by boat or yacht charter from Senga Bay or Likoma Island.

Road transfers

Road transfers are available from both Lilongwe and Blantyre and from the nearest airfield at Club Makokola. Driving time from Club Makokola to the meeting point at Cape Maclear is one hour.

Self-drive

The Domwe Island meeting point is on the beach at Cape Maclear. Four-wheel drive vehicles are not required. Secure parking is available at reception.

Road directions to reception

Take the M3 towards Monkey Bay. About 5km short of Monkey Bay turn left at the One Stop shop onto the dirt road to Cape Maclear and the Lake Malawi National Park Follow the road for approximately 20km to the gate to the National Park. DO NOT ENTER THE PARK At the gate turn right towards the lake Follow the road as it doubles back past the cottages and into the village The Domwe Island reception is on your left, opposite the big baobab tree. It is well sign-posted, and secure parking is available
