Activities at Mkulumadzi

On a Malawi safari, Mkulumadzi guests can swim in the pool and dine under the stars, enjoy river cruises, game drives and walking safaris in scenic Majete Wildlife Reserve.

Mkulumadzi offers a variety of Malawi safari activities. You can head into the bush to track Rhino, hike to the peak of Majete Hill and take a cultural tour of local villages or game view on a riverboat safari. Large numbers of Elephant roam the forest and you'll see herds of Buffalo nestling in the deep shade. In the more open woodlands you can see Eland, Sable antelope, Zebra, Lichtenstein's Hartebeest and Nyala at the water's edge.

For connoisseurs of wildlife many exciting encounters lie in store, with the chance to view big game and many antelope species. Birding enthusiasts will find plenty to see on a Malawi safari including White-breasted Cuckoo-shrike, Racket-tailed Rollers, Rock Pratincole and Pel's fishing owls.

In between game viewing and excursions, you can relax in an idyllic setting on the banks of the Shire River. Enjoy a sundowner on your private deck to the sound of Hippos grunting happily. Climb granite hills for panoramic views across mature woodland and lush river valleys.

Game Drives

Enjoy exciting game drives each morning from Mkulumadzi Lodge. Longer excursions for exploring the far reaches of Majete are also offered which include a packed breakfast or lunch.

Walking Safaris

This activity is highly recommended. The routes that follow the Mkulumadzi and Shire River are very scenic with an abundance of birdlife and large mammals. The early morning is the best and coolest time for walking. Escorted hikes to the top of Majete Hill are also available.

Boating Safaris

Boat trips on the Shire River offer relaxed game viewing opportunities. The lush banks of the Shire are popular with Elephant and Buffalo. Hippo and Crocodile sightings are guaranteed and birdlife is prolific. A morning or afternoon boating safari is an alternative to a game drive.

Viewing Hides

From a secluded and comfortable hide overlooking a waterhole guests can experience the thrill of watching animals coming to drink. Excellent photographic opportunities abound for capturing regular visitors such as Buffalo, Elephant, Black Rhino, Sable antelope and Eland.

Cultural experience

These excursions to a nearby village and community centre offer guests a chance to experience Malawi outside of Majete Wildlife Reserve. Insights are gained into local culture and people's experiences of living alongside the reserve.

African Parks story

This is a great activity for those interested in the practical aspects of managing a wildlife area, and in the story of the rejuvenation of Majete Wildlife Reserve as Malawi's premier wildlife destination.
