Beset by a decades of wars the Mozambique economy collapsed - and with it the tourism industry - but in recent years the people have taken a stand and are rebuilding the once-thriving country. Mozambique Facts is a condensed history of the country.

Mozambique has long been known for its spectacular coastline with the islands of Bazaruto and Benguerra gaining legendary status. With the development of the country many new beach destinations are opening up such as the Quirimbas Archipelago.

Mozambique game parks were legendary for wildlife concentrations but with the civil war the game was virtually wiped out. Today, however, the parks are reclaiming their former glories. Ngorongosa and Niassa are names that will be heard more and more in the future.

Date of Independence

25.06.1975. Mozambique was a Portuguese colony and gained independence after a lengthy liberation war. Soon after independence the country was plunged into 20 year civil war between rival factions. However, Mozambique today is a politically stable country with a growing economy.
