The vegetation of the area is arid, adorned by massive ochre boulders and dry riverbeds. Despite the desert landscapes, wildlife such as Springbok, Gemsbok and a rare type of Elephant roam the plains surrounding Mowani Mountain Camp.
The ancient rock engravings at Twyfelfontein have awarded Namibia with its first World Heritage Site. Damaraland has a unique geological facet, called Organ Pipes – a distinctive series of rock pillars.
The Petrified Forest of the region is millions of years old and was formed when trees were swept along by flooding rivers. The unique landscapes and rock formations of the Damaraland region illustrate why the region is known as one of Namibia’s most scenic areas.
Getting to Mowani Mountain Camp
In Damaraland's Uibasen-Twyfelfontein Community Conservancy lies Mowani Mountain Camp. The nearest towns are Khorixas, which is about 92 km east, and Uis, which is about 122 km south. This is in the northeastern area.
Drive time to Windhoek is 550 km, or roughly 5 ½ hours, and to Swakopmund, 320 km, or about 4 hours. The Twyfelfontein Airstrip transfers take about twenty minutes.
