The NamibRand Nature Reserve is situated in the pristine Namib Desert. The Namib is know as the 'living desert' because of the diversity of life existing in seemingly inhospitable conditions. In this dry place, an array of animals and plants are nourished by condensation from the sea mists rising off the distant Atlantic Ocean.
The reserve lies on the eastern boundary of the Namib Naukluft National Park. You can expect hot summers and pleasant winters in this arid climate. Namibia enjoys sunshine virtually every day of the year; it can be especially hot in the middle of summer between December and March. Winters (May-October) are cooler.
With the total travel distance being approximately 340km (210.8 Miles), it should take between 5 and 5.5 hours to drive. Speeds in excess of 100km/h are not advisable.
The valleys and slopes are home to a unique gathering of wildlife, some of which are found nowhere else on earth. Sightings include Hartmann's Mountain Zebra, Grant's golden mole, Oryx (Gemsbok), Spotted Hyena, African wildcat and the ubiquitous Springbok.
This is big sky country, and home to more than 115 bird species, including Sociable Weavers, Black Eagles and Martial Eagles. This African safari lodge is your retreat from which to explore this rolling sand sea. From dawn to dusk, it's an ever-changing, awe-inspiring landscape.
