Getting to Mumbo Island, Lake Malawi National Park

Mumbo Island Camp is a luxurious eco friendly camp, on a pristine deserted island in the Southern area of Lake Malawi which is known for its many species of vibrant fish.

The beautiful Mumbo Island is situated on Lake Malawi, North of Cape Mclear. Most guests fly via Johannesburg and them into Blantyre or Lilongwe. Guests can fly from Blantyre or Lilongwe to Monkey Bay. From Monkey Bay guests can get a private plane or road transfer to Cape Mclear, from which guests will get a boat transfer to the island.

Road transfers

Road transfers are available from both Lilongwe and Blantyre and from the nearest airfield at Club Makokola. Driving time from Club Makokola to the meeting point at Cape Maclear is one hour.

Self-drive

The Mumbo Island meeting point is on the beach at Cape Maclear. Four-wheel drive vehicles are not required. Secure parking is available at reception.

Road directions to reception

Take the M3 towards Monkey Bay. About 5km short of Monkey Bay turn left at the One Stop shop onto the dirt road to Cape Maclear and the Lake Malawi National Park.
Follow the road for approximately 20km to the gate to the National Park. DO NOT ENTER THE PARK.
At the gate turn right towards the lake
Follow the road as it doubles back past the cottages and into the village
The Mumbo Island reception is on your left, opposite the big baobab tree. It is well sign-posted, and secure parking is available.

By Boat

It is possible to travel straight to Mumbo Island by boat or yacht charter from Senga Bay or Likoma Island by prior arrangement.

By air

SAA has daily flights between Johannesburg and Malawi.
Kenya Airways has daily flights between Nairobi and Malawi.
Air Malawi has flights on most days between Johannesburg / Dar es Salaam, and Malawi.
From the international airports at Lilongwe and Blantyre there are charter flights and Air Malawi domestic flights to Club Makokola (the nearest airfield to reception). Flying time from Lilongwe and Blantyre to Club Makokola is approximately 40 minutes.
